On a Mission Fall 2018

Giving God permission?! Seriously? Who- ever heard of such an idea? After all, God, being God does not need permission from puny humans for anything! Does He not rule and reign from heaven doing whatev- er is in accord with His good pleasure? We are reminded of God’s absolute sovereignty when Daniel exclaims in 4:35 that “God does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand or say unto Him, what doest thou?” Wherever then could the idea come from that God seeks our permission for anything? It issues forth from two critical concepts. First, God is condescendingly gracious. By that is meant He stoops to our humanity by partnering with us mere mortals. Not all mere mortals but only those who are “in Christ”. And, second, God respects the voli- tional powers He has granted us by allowing us to decline the gracious offer made for us to walk in the Spirit as opposed to walking in the flesh. And, given the demonstrably weakened condition of the Christian constit- uency, it appears more of us are doing the latter rather than the former. This conclusion is based on the obvious results of walking or functioning in the Spirit (God-centered) rather than the flesh (self-centered) as described in Galatians 5:16-26. How do we do that? We do it with our will! We “will” to do the wrong thing in the same way we “will” to do the right Giving God 20 | FALL 2018 ON A MISSION womenonamission.net
